The most expensive part of any AI project is getting data into a usable state. Extracting it from source systems, cleaning it, normalising it, making it accessible. A claims processing AI needs to ingest policy documents, claim forms, and customer records. When you later build a compliance checking AI, it needs the same policy documents and customer records, already ingested, already cleaned, already accessible.

The orchestration layer that routes tasks to the right model, manages costs, handles fallbacks, and tracks performance serves every capability. Building it for capability #1 means capability #2 inherits it for free. Model evaluation datasets, prompt libraries, and performance baselines all carry forward.
Shared Governance
The governance framework (audit trails, access controls, bias monitoring, compliance documentation) is built once and extended. Capability #2 doesn't need its own governance framework. It needs domain-specific governance rules added to the existing framework.
Accumulated Domain Knowledge
Each capability you build captures domain knowledge: edge cases, validation rules, user patterns, error types. This knowledge improves every subsequent capability that operates in the same domain. The claims processing AI's understanding of policy documents improves the compliance AI's document handling, even though they're different capabilities.
Compounding Team Capability
The team that builds capability #1 learns the domain, the data, and the architecture. Capability #2 benefits from that learning. By capability #5, the team operates with deep domain understanding that dramatically accelerates delivery.

What happens without a foundation?
You buy an AI chatbot from Vendor A. Then an AI analytics tool from Vendor B. Then an AI document processor from Vendor C. Each solves a specific problem. None share anything.
