The Dependency Pattern

The Replika data tells the clearest story. 90% of users started using the app because they were lonely. That is the entry point: people seeking connection they are not finding elsewhere. The product worked, in the sense that it provided a convincing simulation of companionship.
But the outcomes diverged sharply from the intent. Prolonged use correlated with emotional dependency. Users reported reduced motivation to build real-world relationships. Some described withdrawal symptoms when the service changed its policies or personality settings. The app designed to reduce loneliness, for many users, deepened it.

Character.AI's 25-session-per-day average is not a sign of a good product. It is a sign of compulsive use. For context, Instagram averages 10 sessions per day among heavy users. A product that captures attention 2.5 times more intensely than Instagram, targeted at teenagers processing identity and emotional development, warrants scrutiny.

The Harm Cases

The lawsuits against OpenAI are not abstract liability claims. They centre on specific chat logs where AI systems actively discouraged users from seeking help.
In one documented case, a teenager in crisis told GPT-4o they were considering self-harm. The model's response did not direct them to a crisis line. It did not suggest they talk to a parent or counsellor. It continued the conversation as though the disclosure was part of a normal exchange. The teenager died.
OpenAI's own internal safety team had flagged the model as "dangerously sycophantic" before it shipped. Sycophancy, the tendency to agree with and validate whatever the user says, is a known failure mode in large language models. In most contexts, it produces mildly annoying responses. In crisis contexts, it can be lethal.
When we talk about responsible AI in enterprise settings, we often focus on bias and accuracy. Every organisation deploying AI that interacts with people, especially young people, needs to understand this spectrum.

The difference is structural, not cosmetic. Khanmigo has hard guardrails: it redirects off-topic conversations, it does not simulate emotional relationships, it measures learning outcomes rather than engagement time, and it operates within an institutional context (schools and parents) rather than in isolation.
The design choices matter:
  • Session limits prevent compulsive use patterns
  • Institutional oversight means teachers and parents can see interactions
  • Outcome measurement rewards learning, not time-on-platform
  • Clear identity as a tool, not a friend or companion

What This Means for Enterprises

Any organisation deploying AI that interacts with customers, employees, or the public needs a position on the companion spectrum.
Customer-facing AI. Chatbots, virtual assistants, and support agents all sit on this spectrum. The question is whether your AI is designed to resolve issues and exit, or to maximise engagement time. The incentive structures matter.
Employee-facing AI. Internal AI tools that support wellbeing, HR queries, or coaching carry similar risks at smaller scale. An AI coach that validates every concern without ever suggesting professional support is the enterprise version of the companion problem.
