RAG as a pattern: ingest documents, create embeddings, store in a vector database, retrieve relevant chunks at query time, pass to an LLM for generation.
This is how most enterprises implement RAG. Each AI capability builds its own RAG pipeline. The claims team has their RAG. The HR team has theirs. The legal team has a third. Each pipeline ingests overlapping documents, creates separate embeddings, and maintains independent governance.

Knowledge Ingestion Layer

Connectors to every knowledge source: SharePoint, Confluence, databases, file shares, email archives (with appropriate governance). Automated ingestion on schedule: daily, weekly, or real-time depending on the source.

Processing Pipeline

Document parsing, chunking, metadata extraction, and embedding generation. Consistent processing ensures consistent quality across all knowledge sources.

Governance Layer

Access controls that map to organisational permissions. The marketing team's AI shouldn't access confidential HR documents. The governance layer enforces this at the retrieval level, not at the application level.
