Every enterprise AI capability depends on a layer most leaders never think about: the integration pattern between your systems and the AI models that power them. Getting this layer right determines whether AI stays a siloed experiment or becomes an organisation-wide capability.

The Definition

AI model integration patterns are the standardised ways enterprises connect their applications, data, and workflows to AI models. This includes the APIs you call, the orchestration logic that manages context and sequencing, and the abstraction layers that prevent vendor lock-in.
Think of it as plumbing. The AI model is the engine; integration patterns are the pipes, valves, and controls that connect it to everything else.

The Three Integration Layers

1. Direct API Access

The simplest pattern: your application calls the model provider's API directly. You send a prompt, you get a response.
When it works: Prototypes, single-purpose tools, low-complexity use cases. If you need one model doing one thing, a direct API call is fine.
When it breaks down: As soon as you need multiple models, complex orchestration, context management across conversations, or the ability to switch providers. Direct API access hardcodes you to one vendor's interface.

2. Orchestration Layer

An intermediate layer that sits between your applications and the models. It manages prompt construction, context assembly, model routing, response validation, and error handling.
What this looks like: Your application sends a business request ("analyse this claim"). The orchestration layer retrieves relevant context from your knowledge base, constructs the prompt, selects the appropriate model, validates the response, and returns a structured result.
This is where most enterprise AI value is created. The model does the reasoning; the orchestration layer makes it useful in your specific context.

3. Abstraction and Standardisation

The emerging frontier: standardised protocols for model interaction that decouple your applications from specific model providers. Rather than coding to OpenAI's API or Anthropic's API, you code to a standard interface that can route to any provider.
This pattern is gaining traction as enterprises recognise the strategic risk of model lock-in. The AI space is moving fast. The best model today may not be the best model in six months. Organisations building to abstracted interfaces can swap models without rewriting applications.

Why This Matters for Enterprise

Model Portability

If your integration is tightly coupled to one model provider, you're locked in. When a better model launches (and it will), migrating is a rewrite. When your provider changes pricing (and they will), you absorb it. An abstracted integration layer means you swap models, not rebuild systems.

Compound Capability

Every AI capability in your organisation should be able to share context, tools, and data with every other capability. Standardised integration patterns make this possible. When your claims AI and your fraud AI share the same orchestration layer, they can share knowledge, context, and insights.

Governance and Auditability

A centralised integration layer gives you one place to log interactions, enforce policies, monitor performance, and audit decisions. Without it, governance becomes a per-capability effort that scales linearly with complexity.

Practical Guidance

For early-stage AI adoption: Start with direct API access. Don't over-engineer the integration before you know what you're building.
For production capabilities: Build an orchestration layer. It's the difference between a demo and a system.
For multi-capability platforms: Invest in abstraction. The upfront cost is modest; the long-term flexibility is significant. This is core to building an AI foundation.
The integration layer is rarely the exciting part of an AI conversation. But it's the part that determines whether your second, third, and fourth AI capabilities take weeks or months.
