The domain changed. weareriver.nz became rivergroup.ai. If you want to know why, the URL tells the story. What began in 2011 as a partnership built on form and function is now an enterprise AI partner with 15 years of delivery behind it. We didn't rush this. We earned it.
The Full Arc
In 2011, Rainui and I co-founded Inspired Design. Two disciplines, one team. Fifty projects. Public sector, community organisations, a growing team learning how to deliver under pressure. That became IDESIGN Media, then RIVER, a company built around the idea that you need both strategic vision and design thinking to deliver anything worth building.
Then AI changed everything. In 2023 we bet the company on it. In 2025, after two years of breaking things, rebuilding our tech stack, and building an internal AI platform we called Ripple, we started working with select clients.
Now we're here.

What Changed
RIVER was a digital agency that pivoted to AI. RIVER Group is an AI transformation company with deep enterprise delivery roots. The distinction matters.
We didn't bolt AI onto our existing services. We rebuilt from the ground up. New tech stack. New delivery patterns. New platform architecture. The AI work isn't a division or a product line. It's the company.
The delivery philosophy hasn't changed. Vision upfront. Build in stages. Manage risk in real time. Start with people and outcomes, not technology. That's been true since project one and it's true now. The difference is that every project now runs on a foundation designed to compound AI value over time, not deliver one-off capabilities.
The Ripple Effect
During our R&D years, we built an internal AI platform called Ripple. Knowledge orchestration, model management, tool calling, guardrails. Everything we needed to ship enterprise AI fast and safely.
What we didn't expect was what happened after. Each capability we built made the next one faster. The health coach informed the knowledge base architecture. The knowledge base patterns improved the document processing. The document processing fed back into smarter orchestration. Each project didn't just deliver a result. It made the platform better for the next project.
We started calling this the Ripple Effect. Compound intelligence. Every AI capability an organisation builds creates the foundation for the next one, and the one after that. Not a product name. A principle. The opposite of the "isolated pilot" pattern we see everywhere else.
This is what we offer. Not AI projects that deliver a result and stop. An AI foundation that compounds.
What We Do
Four services. Each one grounded in everything above.
AI Discovery is for organisations that know AI matters but aren't sure where it fits. We run a structured sprint to identify high-value AI opportunities, validate feasibility, and build an actionable roadmap. Not a whitepaper. A plan you can execute.
AI Solutions is the build. Production AI capabilities designed, built, and deployed into real workflows. Health coaching. Document intelligence. Knowledge extraction. Claims processing. Whatever the use case, built to enterprise standard with proper guardrails, evaluation, and oversight.

AI Foundation is the platform layer. The infrastructure that makes every future AI capability faster and cheaper to build. Model orchestration, knowledge management, tool calling frameworks, evaluation pipelines. This is where the Ripple Effect lives.
Digital & Data is the connective tissue. Data engineering, system integration, API architecture, cloud infrastructure. AI is only as good as the data and systems it connects to. Most organisations need this work before (or alongside) AI.
The Track Record
We don't talk about what we could do. We talk about what we've done.
99%
effort reduction in genomic reporting

25x
revenue growth over five years
Source: Real Groovy - e-commerce transformation
71%
return-to-work improvement

300%
increase in case capacity

Across health, insurance, sport, retail, government, education, and international development. Clients like UniMed, Edison Health, Real Groovy, the Mental Health Foundation, Oceania Football, UNESCO, the Ministry of Justice, and the University of Auckland.
Every one of those relationships started the same way: a real problem, a clear vision, and a team that delivered. No pitch deck replaces that.
Why Now
The AI market is noisy. Lots of companies added "AI" to their website in the last two years. We spent those two years doing the work. Testing models, breaking agents, rebuilding our stack, building a platform, shipping production AI for real clients. We didn't announce anything until we'd earned it.
95%
of generative AI pilots fall short of expectations
Source: MIT, 2025
Most enterprise AI efforts stall after the pilot. The demo works. The production system doesn't. The gap between a working prototype and a reliable, scalable, governed AI capability is where most projects die. That gap is exactly where we operate.
We are proud to be 100% New Zealand built, Māori and Pacific owned, and enterprise proven. That's not a tagline. It's who we are and how we show up.
What started as a partnership, three degrees, and a belief that technology should serve people is now a company I'd put up against anyone in this market. RIVER Group is what comes from not cutting corners.
